Nine vendors were selected for real-world testing of complementary PNT technologies to strengthen critical infrastructure and counter GPS disruptions.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently awarded contracts to nine vendors specializing in Complementary Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technologies. These technologies strive to bolster the Global Positioning System (GPS), which is essential for various modes of transportation and numerous economic sectors. Despite broadcasting from medium Earth orbit, GPS signals remain vulnerable to disruptions. The DOT’s funding—totaling over $7.2 million—will support real-world field tests to enhance the reliability and security of PNT services, which is crucial for critical infrastructure.
“DOT is impressed with the quality of the proposal responses and received more proposals than could be funded under Simplified Acquisition Procedure guidelines. DOT intends to move expeditiously to issue a Complementary PNT Rapid Phase II solicitation to expand the set of Complementary PNT technologies to be evaluated,” said DOT Chief Science Officer Dr. Robert C. Hampshire.
The awarded Complementary PNT technologies will be tested within six months at various test ranges involving Federal Government-Hosted, Critical Infrastructure, and Vendor-Fielded models. This initiative aligns with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and addresses the increasing threats of jamming and the falsifying of GPS signals, seeking to strengthen the cybersecurity and resilience of U.S. critical infrastructure.
